Scandalous, Immoral and Improper by Helen Percy
I have just finished reading Helen Percy's book about her time in the wilderness. I just could not put it down! At the time all this was going on I had just come to Coupar Angus and, being newly ordained and a bit green took on board the 'establishment' portrayal of events as being truth; after all, no one would think that Presbytery officials might lie. However, my own expereince has clearly shown that Presbytery Officials can, and do, play fast and loose with the truth and with the system.
Whatever else is true, someone in this situation is lying: to the Presbytery, the General Assembly, and to themselves, and I do not believe it is Helen!
When I read Helen's book I did so at one sitting and by the time I was finished I was weeping with the disgrace and injustice of how she was treated by our church. The attitude toward her from her colleagues, the Presbytery, the Principle Clerk, Board of National Mission AND General Assembly of 1999, should cause all in the Kirk to feel shame and resolve that nothing like it should ever happen again.
It is a heartbreaking and enthralling book and I commend it to all.
